Writes LEKE BAIYEWU Prior to the primaries held by various political parties to field candidates for the 2023 general elections, several parties, political groups, and prominent Nigerians were in the news for their search for a ‘Third Force’ to unseat and end the ruling All Progressives Congress and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party. Since 1999, the two major political parties have governed Nigeria at the presidential level. The PDP ruled for 16 years, from 1999 to 2015, before the APC seized office in 2015 and ruled for seven years. The next presidential election will be held in 2023, after the APC has served eight years in office, and the smaller parties are now forming alliances and realigning forces in order to take on the APC and the PDP.
