Tinubu’s wife is a pastor, so there’s no need to be concerned about the Muslim/Muslim ticket – Orji Kalu

The chief whip of the 9th Senate, Orji Uzor Kalu, on Wednesday spoke on the controversial plan to field a Muslim as the running mate of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu.

There have been reactions across boards over the Muslim/Muslim ticket in the 2023 presidential election.

Some Nigerians in their reaction have asked electorates to ignore the religion of the candidates but focus on their competence.

The Christian Association of Nigeria, however, rejected the move by the ruling party to field a Muslim vice presidential candidate.

Kalu while addressing newsmen at the National Assembly on Wednesday called on the Christians not to feel threatened since Tinubu’s wife is a pastor.

The lawmaker said, “Let me tell you, in my house, my wife is the head of the house in reality. Even you men that are here, now that your wives aren’t here, they are the head. Like if I wear these clothes, my wife will tell me ‘My dear, these clothe is not good remove them’. Your wife will tell you you are supposed to eat Akara and Akamu, whether you argue with her, you must take that Akamu and your wife want you to pay children’s school fees, whether you argue or not, you must pay.

“The Christians should relax because Tinubu’s wife is a pastor and once she’s a pastor we are protected because she’s not a housewife. She has political knowledge.”

Tinubu’s wife, who currently represents Lagos Central Senatorial district, was ordained an Assistant Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in 2018.

Kwankwaso, Obi expand stakes in NNPP, LP, and threaten APC, PDP in presidential election

Please spread the word about this story:

Kwankwaso. Obi

With their popular candidates, the New Nigeria Peoples Party and Labour Party may pose a serious threat to the ruling All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 general elections. Writes

LEKE BAIYEWU

Prior to the primaries held by various political parties to field candidates for the 2023 general elections, several parties, political groups, and prominent Nigerians were in the news for their search for a ‘Third Force’ to unseat and end the ruling All Progressives Congress and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.

Since 1999, the two major political parties have governed Nigeria at the presidential level.

The PDP ruled for 16 years, from 1999 to 2015, before the APC seized office in 2015 and ruled for seven years.

The next presidential election will be held in 2023, after the APC has served eight years in office, and the smaller parties are now forming alliances and realigning forces in order to take on the APC and the PDP.

The expected mergers and alliances, on the other hand, do not appear to have taken place yet.

However, individual parties and candidates seem to be making efforts, perhaps from the regional and zonal levels. Out of the 18 parties presently registered with the Independent National Electoral Commission, the APC and the PDP included, two other parties are getting the attention of the electorate, especially in their strongholds. They are the New Nigeria People’s Party and the Labour Party.

The NNPP and the LP have been in existence before now, with the latter winning elections in previous general elections. But, perhaps, due to their presidential candidates, they are now under the public spotlight. While a former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabi’u Kwankwaso, is the candidate of the NNPP, a former Governor of Anambra State is running for the Office of the President on the platform of the LP.

Not only that, close watchers of events and the politicking going on in Kano State, which is considered to be the base of the NNPP and Kwankwaso, have expressed fears over the widening popularity of the opposition party under Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of the APC. It is worthy to note that Kano presently has three influential politicians – Ganduje, Kwankwaso and another former governor, Ibrahim Shekarau. It will be noted that the trio have always formed alliances – two against one – in the previous elections. This time, Kwankwaso dumped the PDP for the NNPP while Shekarau quit the APC to join Kwankwaso.

The fears are also based on the fact that Kano is strategic to the electoral victory of the APC, especially that of its presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. The North-West is said to have the highest voting population in the country (followed by the South-West), with Kano, which Ganduje often describes as a swing state, having the biggest voting bloc in the geopolitical zone. In the South-West, it is Lagos where Tinubu was its two-term governor. The block votes in Kano were said to have been so attractive that the annual Tinubu Colloquium, a lecture series marking his birthday, which is usually held in Lagos and Abuja, with political heavyweights and allies in attendance, was moved to the state in 2021.

However, Kwankwaso and his NNPP are said to be staging a political tsunami against the APC in Kano, with mass defections recorded in the state already, including close aides to Ganduje and prominent members of the Tinubu Campaign.

Obi of the Labour Party was a member of the PDP until a few days before the presidential primary that produced former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as its standard-bearer. Some presidential aspirants like Obi in the PDP had left the race, with one of them describing the scramble for delegates’ votes as “obscenely monetised.”

Perhaps, Obi saw the handwriting on the wall. He defected from the PDP to the LP. Being from the South-East where there are agitations over an alleged marginalisation of the zone – a zone that has never produced a president for the country, sentiments from the area have been in Obi’s favour.

Those following Obi’s campaign have also noted the massive youth support he enjoys especially on social media. Though INEC has said virtual support doesn’t count but actually ballot votes, several ‘influencers’ are now mobilising for registration and collection of Permanent Voter Cards by eligible Nigerians, also in the move to end APC and PDP’s reign.

On June 12 when Nigeria was marking Democracy Day, Obi had addressed the issue of lacking the political structure to defeat the ‘principalities and powers’ called the APC and the PDP.

Speaking via his verified Twitter handle (@PeterObi), the presidential candidate tweeted, “Whenever I hear of no structure, my answer to it is simple: the 100 million Nigerians that live in poverty will be the structure.

The 35 million Nigerians who don’t know where their next meal will come from will be the structure.

The elderly, our mothers, fathers and the old ones (who are) dying or being owed gratuity/pension will be the structure.

ASUU: the lecturers that are being owed and the students who are not in school will be the structure. We’ll create the structure, and they’ll see what the structure is all about.

The structure is about human beings. — PO A Professor of Political Science at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Emmanuel Onyebuchi, stated that should parties have to choose their vice-presidential candidates from the South, and they cannot pick Obi from the South-East geopolitical zone, then they should look for one in the South-South.

Onyebuchi said, “Let me start by saying that one of the mistakes made by the PDP was to frustrate Obi out of the party. Things are changing seriously in Nigeria. The frustration and the hardships that the citizens are suffering have made them start looking for men of integrity and impeccable character, and such people are very few, and Obi is one of them.

I don’t know what actually transpired. Obi leaving the PDP is a very big minus for the party because some of us had already concluded that he was going to be the running mate to Atiku because we have looked around and there are just one or two credible candidates remaining.

I don’t know what happened, even with Atiku himself. It is a real problem now. It is a very big problem now because I don’t know any other candidate that commands the respect and trust within the South-East like Obi. He has the backing of the Church and so on.

I can see people awakening from their deep slumber; you can see the rush for PVCs. People are charged; people are highly mobilised right now.”

The lecturer added, “For the PDP, I think the best option left for them now is to look for a credible candidate from the South-South.”

The professor dismissed the claim that parties were sceptical about picking candidates from the South-East due to its low voting population, stating that Nigerians would be shocked by the mass turnout of voters in the 2023 general elections to support Obi. He said, “What I am telling you now is that people have awoken from their slumber.

The problem with the South-East is not voters’ turnout. If you can see what is happening now with the level of mobilisation, people would be shocked by the (huge) turnout in 2023.

People would be surprised by the level of turnout from the South-East and all over the federation where the people of the South-East are living. They are now mobilising to get their PVCs.

And if they match it with coming out to vote, Nigerians would be surprised by the number of votes coming from the South-East. As I said, the PDP made a very big mistake by frustrating Obi out of the party and most of the votes from the South-East and the major cities where the Igbo are living would go to Peter Obi.”

However, a ranking member of the House of Representatives, Aminu Suleiman, who is representing Fagge Federal Constituency in Kano and once announced his plan to obtain Nomination and Declaration of Interest forms of the APC for Tinubu for N100m, said the NNPP lacked the political structure to beat the ruling party in the state.

Speaking on the chances of the APC and Tinubu getting block votes despite NNPC’s growing popularity, Suleiman said, “As a politician, I would not want to say I will not lose sleep, I can only tell you that I am going to sleep with my eyes open.

” He also stated, “I concede to the fact that Kwankwaso is a household name. He is a politician of repute but I can tell you that the APC is still the party to beat in Kano.”

Timeline: 100 days of ASUU strike monitored by Pulse

News from pluse.ng

IMA ELIJAH

An easy follow-up of all that has been going on since ASUU strike kicked off.

ASUU declares 4 weeks strike

Why is ASUU on strike?

ASUU started a one-month warning strike on February 14, 2022, to demand that the Federal government fulfill the 2009 agreement.

The agreement signed by the FG with the union requires that the government commit N200 billion annually for five years to the revitalization of the sector. To meet this segment of the ASUU demand, the Federal Government must cough out N1 trillion.

The union also said the government refused to include earned academic allowances in the 2022 budget as promised.

Chris Ngige, minister of labor, said the federal government does not have the funds to meet some of the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

ASUU declares one-month warning strike

The union had been deliberating on whether to embark on a fresh strike or not at its National Executive Council meeting which held at the University of Lagos.

The union had earlier said its resolution on the strike action would be announced at the end of its two-day meeting which started on Saturday, February 12, 2022.

We will not join ASUU strike – Chukwuemeka Odumewgu Ojukwu University

Prof. Osita Chiaghanam, Interim Chairman, Progressive Academic Staff Union of Universities, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam, says the institution’s priority is academic excellence.

“This will be led and coordinated by NANS Joint Campus Committee (JCC) and Zonal Executives including National officials of NANS in the states,’’ President of the Nigerian Students Association, Sunday Isefon, said.

Warning strike: FG to meet ASUU on Tuesday

The Minister for Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige, will be meeting with the executives of the union and other relevant government agencies.

Mr Na’allah Nanzim, the Public Relations Officer (PRO), NANS Zone C, who spoke during the protest said the protest was basically to express the students’ grievances over incessant strikes by ASUU.

He said students often suffer setbacks in their academic journeys anytime ASUU embarks on strike action.

Ngige, who spoke to State House correspondents at the end of the meeting with the president, said the federal government had so far paid over N92 billion as earned allowances and revitalization fees to federal-owned universities across the country.

ASUU strike will soon be cut short — Ngige

Ngige expressed the hope of truncation of the warning strike when he spoke with newsmen at the end of a conciliation meeting between the government and the union.

Ngige said the meeting agreed on many issues and a timeline was scheduled for the implementation of the agreements.

According to him, ASUU officials agreed to return to their members with offers made by the government and revert to him before the week runs out.

He noted that many of the items in the 2020 Memorandum of Action (MOA), had been dealt with exhaustively, while some were being addressed.

Strike: ASUU payment platform, UTAS, failed integrity test, FG insists The Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Mr Kashifu Inuwa, however, insisted that UTAS has failed the necessary tests that should qualify it to be used as a payment platform.

Inuwa stated this when he fielded questions from State House correspondents at the end of the meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), presided by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo at the Council Chambers, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

ASUU denies failure of UTAS integrity test

“This press statement is necessitated by the need for ASUU to put the records straight on the grounds already covered in our patriotic struggle to get the government to deploy UTAS as a suitable solution for salary payment in our university system.

“Let us put it on record that an integrity test was carried out by NITDA on Aug. 10, 2021, in NUC where relevant government agencies and all the end-users in the University system were present.

“At the end of the exercise, all, without exception, expressed satisfaction with UTAS as a suitable solution for salary payment in our universities.

“This was attested to by the report coming from NITDA then to the effect that UTAS scored 85 per cent in User Acceptance Test (UAT).”

Ngige said he has been pushing to see that everything contained in the 2020 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by the government and the union was done, including the implementation of the renegotiated positions.

Ngige says he’s tired of ASUU going on strike every time it disagrees with FG

“If you go to the Labour Act, there is something called picketing. You can picket. A strike is the ultimate thing. Picketing means that you can stay in the corridor, clapping or singing. Workers are permitted to do so. But I am tired that every time there is a disagreement, it is a strike.”

Education Minister insists striking ASUU members should not get paid

“The lecturers have continued to earn salaries while on strike; it doesn’t make sense to earn salaries when you have refused to work.

“If you refuse to even pay them, by the time they call off the strike, they will still come back to fight for the payment of the period they refused to work.”

FG denies knowing why ASUU is on strike

“Why they (ASUU) have chosen to go on strike is something that neither you nor I can explain.”

“In the school system,we have about 2.6 million Nigerian undergraduates in the nearly 200 universities across Nigeria. The federal government owns less than 50 of these universities. State governments own nearly 50 of them as well whereas private people, private organizations, faith-based organizations own over 100 of them.”

Nigerians on Twitter have also virtually protested over the over-extended civil action, with some sharing stories on how many lives have been affected by the strike.

ASUU strike: NANS begins mass protest

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has reaffirmed that there would be no going back on the mass action declared by the association to ensure that the nation’s economy is grounded and that no political activities including primaries by political parties take place in Abuja or any part of the country until the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is called off.

Why we will remain on strike—ASUU

5 likely scenarios in this year’s final

The main storyline for the upcoming final has focused on it being a replay of the 2018 edition, where Real Madrid won their 13th Champions League trophy. It is difficult to tell how a high-stakes game like this could play out.

Real Madrid and Liverpool will meet for the second time in 4 years in Saturday’s Champions League final

Here are five ways the Champions League final could play out:

One fact that would undoubtedly make the final a more special is that either team stands a chance to win a treble. Real Madrid stormed to the La Liga title, and in doing so, Carlo Ancelotti added another feather to his prestigious cap, winning all five of Europe’s top leagues.

The 13-time Champions League winners also added the Spanish Super Cup to their trophy cabinet earlier, following a 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in Saudi Arabia.

Despite a 3-1 win over Wolves on the final day of the Premier League season, Liverpool saw their quadruple hopes vanish, thanks to an inspired five-minute spell by Ilkay Gundogan, which helped Manchester City reclaim their trophy from Liverpool.

Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp watched his quadruple hopes fade despite 3-1 over Wolves Imago

With the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, Jurgen Klopp and his men can use Sunday’s disappointment to inspire a memorable night for the Anfield faithful.

Cult heroes often emerge from the most unlikely places, as nobody can predict what could endear a player to their fanbase. With Divock Origi, the argument is straightforward because the Belgian forward has a knack for scoring important goals.

In the Champions League, he scored a brace to help Liverpool overturn a3-0 first-leg loss to Barcelona in 2019. Then, against Tottenham Hotspur, Origi scored the only goal in the final to win Liverpool its sixth Champions League title.

A major talking point from 2018 final was the injury to Mohamed Salah. Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos was man-marking Salah, and while competing for a ball, the tough-tackling Spaniard left Salah in a squirming pile on the field.

Sergio Ramos injured Mohamed Salah in the 2018 Champions League final Getty Images

Salah suffered a dislocated shoulder and had to be substituted four minutes later, leaving the pitch in tears for current Brighton midfielder Adam Lallana.

In another scintillating season on the right-wing, the dangerous Egyptian forward has scored 31 goals and contributed 16 assists in all competitions as Liverpool looked to seal an unprecedented quadruple.

If 2018 still haunts Salah, the Real Madrid defenders will need to be in top form to deny the forward, who looks nearly unstoppable on his day.

Shouldering the expectation of being one of the chief creators for the team while occupying a sensitive position like fullback is not an easy task, but Trent Alexander-Arnold often pulls his weight.

Alexander-Arnold wins most duels but has struggled against players like Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli whose direct running and agility left the right back chasing shadows. One could argue that fellow Brazilian Vinicius Junior would be a real handful for the England International.

Vinicius has become a revelation under the management of Carlo Ancelotti, contributing 20 goals and 21 assists for Real Madrid in all competitions.

No fewer than five players in this fixture have scored at least five goals in the UEFA Champions League this season, including competition leader Karim Benzema who has 15. Liverpool has a talismanic winger of their own, with Mohamed Salah paving the way to the finals with 12 goals so far.

Carlo Ancelotti’s direct wing play has shown that goals can and will be scored even in the most unlikely moments, showing Manchester City and Chelsea before them that a comeback is always in the cards.

In Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, Real Madrid has a fierce opponent that presses relentlessly, with many dangerous attackers like Sadio mane, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota.

Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah is hungry for a chance to punish Real Madrid for the 2018 final, while Gareth Bale could be looking to replicate that stunning performance as the ultimate farewell to the historic Spanish side.
